Latest ASUP Strike Update: ASUU Call On FG To Resolve ASUP/COEASU Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has once again expressed deep concern over the prolonged strike embarked upon by the Academic staff Union of Polytechnics and College of education Academic Staff Union (COEASU).

The ASUU President, Dr Nasir Fagge, pressed on the Federal Government to urgently resolve the contending issues that made lecturers of Polytechnics and colleges of education embarked on the strike.

Fagge, made the call in Abuja while briefing newsmen on the state of the Nation.

For the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), the strike has been on for the past ten months now, while for the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, members, the strike has been on for the past 5 months.

LASU Strike: Govt Appeals LASU Lecturers To Embrace Dialogue

Lagos State Government on Saturday pleaded to striking LASU workers to embrace dialogue instead of continuing with their industrial action, which it described as an unnecessary drawback for its spirited efforts to boost the academic standing and reputation of the institution.

While explaining its stance on the various issues raised by the lecturers, the State Government said the strike is a crude attempt to force new terms and conditions of service on the university without due regard to their practical feasibility or the State Governments interests and perspectives as employer of labour, proprietor and sponsor of the university.

A statement signed by the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Lateef Ibirogba, and released to The liveschoolnews.com.ng said, the striking members of the local branch of Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) appeared to be whipping up sentiments to justify a premeditated industrial action, as all the points they advanced could not even be properly classified as trade disputes that could warrant an Indefinite Strike Action.

The lecturers union executives, according to him, have in an attempt to rush out on strike, evaded all attempts to make them follow due process and engage in reasoned dialogue as regards the issues raised, most of which, he said, were not at all contemplated by the terms and conditions of the lecturers employment as well as its financial and academic plan.

Why We Withhold Results Of Some Candidates-WAEC

The West African Examination Council has come out to refute speculation hovering around that it withholds results of some candidates due to their excellent performance.

The West Africa Examination Council says it withholds results due to examination malpractices in its centres.

While speaking at the 18th Youth Empowerment and Restoration Initiative Career workshop organised by Lonadek Oil and Gas Consultants in Lagos on Thursday, the Zonal Coordinator of WAEC, Lagos and Ogun states, Mrs. C.O. Agwu, said examinations conducted by the body were not to witch-hunt candidates, but to examine their academic intelligence.

Agwu said, WAEC rewards the best three outstanding students in its examinations.

Meanwhile, we cancel results of candidates who score zero if there is any indicting report about the centre. It is not about the score, it is about having reports of malpractices at any of our centres.

Imagine a situation where students from the same centre had the same answers, made the same mistakes, and committed the same errors. In such cases, we call subject professionals to examine the situation and make recommendations.

She advised students to pay adequate attention to instructions, stressing that candidates lose marks when they dont pay adequate attention to instructions.

On the issue of leakage of examination questions, Agwu said it was due to loopholes from other concerned persons.

ASUU Decries Tuition Fee Hike In Obafemi Awolowo University

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has opposed the decision of the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State
to increase the charges of newly admitted students of the institution.

The Senate of OAU had increased tuition fees payable by the new students in the Arts/Law/Social Sciences category by 322 per cent; Clinical Sciences and Pharmacy, 267 per cent, and the Sciences,
253 per cent, claiming it was to improve the standard of the school among other reasons.

But ASUU chapter of the university faulted the university’s management
approach of attempting to generate income, saying that it was “unjustifiable”.

It will be recalled that students of the institution had since the announcement of the increment engaged in several protests as a means to kick against the new fee regime.

It was gathered that the students were in one of their protests shot by a soldier, who was an escort to a presidency convoy that was led by an
ex-militant.

However, the lecturers in a statement by its Chairman, Dr. Caleb Aborisade, warned that students and parents should not be made to suffer the inadequacy of Federal Government.

They demanded that the fee should be reverted to status quo, adding that the increment was not in the interest of the student.

The statement released on Saturday read in part, “The union, while recognizing the huge funding gaps arising from the inability of the
Federal Government of Nigeria to adequately fund education at all levels, vehemently opposes the route chosen by the University administration to address the problem. The increments cannot by any stretch of the imagination be justified.

The Full Speech By Boko Haram Leader, Abubarka Shekau On Abuja Explosion

Here is the full speech by the Boko Haram insurgent leader,
Abubarkar Shekau after the Abuja bomb blast that figuratively claimed over seventy-five [75] lives.
In this exclusive speech, as usual, he riddled the Nigerian
nation and lambasted the president with very saucy words that you could say, are unfit for the person of a national president.
“Let the world know that we were responsible for the bombing within Abuja in an area called Nyanya. (President) Jonathan you are a lame duck. Jonathan, you are now too small for us; we can only deal with your grand masters like Obama the president of America even they cannot do anything to us we are more than them,” he said.
“Yes we did it; we carried out the attack because you
kill Muslims in Plateau; you kill Muslims in every country of the world. Why don’t you global tyrants talk when Muslims are killed in Afghanistan?

Why don’t you talk when Muslims were killed in Iraq? And they are still being killed. Why don’t you talk when Muslims are killed in the Islamic state of Iraq and Syria, and now Yemen, Mali, Azerbaijan, Shishan, Pakistan?,” he asked.
“Why were you not complaining when our Muslim brethren
were killed in Plateau, their wives were forcefully taken and
raped, and if they give birth, their children were being killed?
So because of that tiny incident that happened in Abuja,
everybody is out there making an issue out of it across the
globe” “We want you, Jonathan, to know that we are worshipping only God that is why we are always victorious in all our attacks; stupid fellow like you;
if you are that wise, why is it still very difficult for you to locate where we are up till date despite the fact that we are within Nigeria. Look at us we are right within your city; and you don’t even know how to find us. Let me tell you now; I am here very close to you; I dare you to get me, if you can.”
“You cannot do anything. Remember that this is the exactly the fifth year that you boasted that you were going to finish with us in just three months; so we are not bothered with any
further boasting that you will make now because what you
cannot accomplish in five years, is very difficult to achieve
now, never!”
“We will not stop until our aim is achieved; so everyone that
calls himself a muslim should stop obeying the constitution,
should leave democracy, should stay away from western
education.

“We are the bombers of Nyanya; yes we are the bombers; if
you really want to know who did it, let me tell you now; it was
Shekau that did it”. Chuckling and tapping his chest, he said
“this is me, Abubakar Shekau whose turban you don’t like seeing; whose armoured shirt you so much hate; this is my usual gun with which I kill. Get more annoyed, because I am still here; yes, I am the Shekau that does not like Christians, and I don’t like Muslims that relate with Christians.
“We have been commanded by Allah not to associate with
infidels because they cannot be trusted until they accept your religion. So you cannot say you are a believer and then you go and follow democracy; we cannot allow you to ridicule the religion of God; never! “
“I am not afraid of death; and I pray that God should let me be killed by an unbeliever so that I can gain His paradise. We
don’t love this sinful world of yours; we want to die and go to
the presence of Him who created everyone so that we can
enjoy ourselves.
“Yes I am the dreaded Shekau; the one even Obama fears; not even Obama, even if Pharaoh were alive today he would
reckon with me (laughing). To hell with the United Nations, to
hell with Ban ki Moon; to hell with Obama. Yes we did the
bombing in Nyanya; we did it”.
